The TV Tropes wiki (be wary, huge time sink!) has invented a number of different "terms" for Technobabble and its various uses; the idea behind TV tropes is that all of these various tropes can be used either for good or for ill -- technobabble can be used well (to give a particular feel -- kinda like Tauhid was talking about) or it can be used as flimsy Scotch-Tape for the plot, in which case it's a bad usage.

Oddly, I have never seen the Truman Show, but I have those sensations too -- it must be some kind of universal human thing.</description>
