Psst. Hey kid. You like show notes? Yeah, man. All the cool kids are doing it. Here, take a look…

  • We talk about Mark’s brand new scifi-comedy webcomic, ETI-PI.
  • A chap named “Mathew” asks us to discuss scifi Logistics. So we do.
  • Star Trek toilet humour. Har har.
  • Mathew also asks us about showing the light in an environment - “How do you approach this and is it as difficult as it seems?”
  • I order a sandwich, and it’s all downhill from here.
  • “This is basically the Jim Francis Power Hour.”
  • We look at the American Film Institute’s 10 Ten Scifi Films. I disagree with a lot of the list.
  • Scifi as a form of Social Commentary.
  • I give a very brief outline of what Wall-E is actually about.
  • I realise that the sandwich people haven’t called me back about my order yet and get a little agitated by my lack of sandwich.
  • I briefly talk about how the question “Where is my sandwich?” affects web Cartoonists everywhere.
  • We move on from sandwiches to pizza.

  1. Hey… It was a great “Ben and the mystery of the sandwich” story… It has the great mystery, phone calls that never been answered, and even the DOG!

Oh, by the way. This weekend I’ve seen the WALL-E….And it’s incredibly wonderful. Not sure about how it’s great as a scifi….but as a story about the cutest rusty contraption ever made and the baggage of positive emotions n’stuff, WALL-E is the No1 film of the year. Truly Disney’s style….

  2. Yeah the logistics issue really annoyed the hell out of me with Idiocracy which I guess is Sci-Fi. It was the only time where it wasn’t a life or death matter where I was wondering how the logistic operations work. Everyone was idiots so how the hell did they build three quarters of the fairly advanced technology…

  3. One last thing to add.
    The sandwich is a lie.

  4. On the subject of logistics. It’s a bigger concern for those of us dealing with traditional sorts of spaceflight (no magical ftl drive or replicators.) Even in Sunrise where I have a form of near-instantaneous FTL, travel can take days or weeks depending on signal gain and routes.

That means ships carry their supplies with them. That means they have to lug supplies to last them a bit, and also means that their combat capacity (if they’re smaller ships or devoted warships) is limited because they can run down their power source, reaction mass or ammunition in combat.

    Also… m’eh!
